If there are details that are obviously from a particular brand that could make my creation seem like a replica or a copy, I scratch it off or I change it by adding a hint of my personal touch to make it mine.

I suppose that is also how other designers work. I believe that they base their particular designs from their particular competitors so that they know where they stand. You can’t say that you happen to be competitive in the market or in the industry that you are generally in case you don’t study your competition’s business.
